OM Manganese operates a manganese mine approximately 100km north of Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. To meet the mine's need for additional telephony services, Openet has implemented an IP telephony solution using the Asterisk open source PBX. The solution provides voice services to parts of the mine over the existing fibre optic network infrastructure removing the need for additional copper cabling which is prone to lightning strike in this highly mineralised region.
The Asterisk PBX implemented by Openet communicates via E1 interfaces with the site's existing NEC PABX and a Cisco voice router that routes off-site calls via a satellite link to Perth.
Key benefits of the Asterisk solution include:
- Low hardware costs
- No licencing or software costs
- Exceptional flexibility and ease of deployment
- Advanced call routing, voicemail, IVR, ...
Consideration is being given to the implementation of another Asterisk PBX in the Perth head office to facilitate inter-PBX trunking and least cost routing of calls over the company's wide area network.
