Domain Name System
The Domain Name System or DNS provides a method of associating human friendly names for computers to machine friendly IP addresses. It is one of the most used services on the Internet. Every time you visit your favourite web site at www.somewhere.com your computer performs a DNS lookup on the www.somewhere.com name and gets back an IP address. Your computer then uses the IP address to access the remote web server and retrieve your page.
DNS also provides the mechanism by which email is distributed around the globe. When you send a message to email@example.com your mail server performs a DNS lookup to determine wich email server to send the email to.
DNS is used within a corporate network in much the same way to allow people to refer to computers by name instead of IP address.
Openet assists clients with the propper management of both their internal and external DNS records. This includes the hosting of client DNS records on our DNS servers free of charge.
